How to find the Qibla without a phone

  1. Find true North. A magnetic compass points to magnetic North, which can differ from true North by several degrees depending on where you are.
  2. Turn clockwise from North by the angle shown for your city.
  3. At home, mark the direction once so you do not need to measure it again.
Questions

About the Qibla

What is the Qibla?

The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face in prayer. Allah commanded it in the Quran: “So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram.” (Al-Baqarah 2:144)

How is the Qibla direction calculated?

Along the shortest path over the globe (the great circle) from your location to the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. The result is an angle from true North, measured clockwise.

How do I use the live compass?

On a phone, press “Use live compass”, allow access if asked, and hold the phone flat. Turn until the message says you are facing the Qibla. Keep away from metal and magnets, which disturb the phone’s compass.

Why does the Qibla from North America point north-east?

Because the shortest route over the curved Earth runs north-east, across the Atlantic, not east along a flat map. That is why a flat map can mislead.
