Self-ruqyah: how to do it

Ruqyah from the Quran and the Sunnah, step by step: what to recite, how the Prophet ﷺ did it, and the verses with English, Roman Urdu and Urdu meanings.

Recited verse by verse by Mishary Rashid Alafasy. The method is written in English and Roman Urdu.

  1. 1

    Begin with a clear intention

Healing comes from Allah alone. Ruqyah is a supplication to Him with His words, His names and the duas of the Prophet ﷺ. It must contain nothing that calls on anyone other than Allah.

Ruqyah is allowed as long as it contains no shirk: Sahih Muslim 2200.

Niyyat saaf rakhain: shifa sirf Allah deta hai. Ruqyah Allah ke kalaam, us ke naamon aur Nabi ﷺ ki duaon ke zariye Allah se dua hai. Is mein Allah ke siwa kisi ko pukarna bilkul nahi.

  2. 2

    Recite Surah Al-Fatihah

Recite Al-Fatihah over yourself or the sick person. The Companions recited it as ruqyah and the Prophet ﷺ approved it.

    Sahih al-Bukhari 2276.

  3. 3

Recite Ayat al-Kursi and the end of Al-Baqarah

Recite Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285–286).

The last two verses of Al-Baqarah suffice the one who recites them at night: Sahih al-Bukhari 5009. Ayat al-Kursi before sleep: Sahih al-Bukhari 5010.

Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) aur Surah Al-Baqarah ki aakhri do ayaat (2:285–286) parhain.

  4. 4

Recite the three Quls, blow and wipe

Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas into your cupped hands, blow lightly into them, then wipe over as much of your body as you can, starting with the head, face and front of the body. Do this three times.

This was the Prophet’s practice every night: Sahih al-Bukhari 5017. When he was ill, ‘A’ishah did it for him: Sahih al-Bukhari 5748, Sahih Muslim 2192.

Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq aur An-Nas parh kar dono hatheliyon mein halka sa phoonkain, phir jahan tak haath pohanchay jism par phair lain: pehle sar, chehra aur jism ka agla hissa. Yeh teen baar karain.

  5. 5

For pain: hand on the place, then the dua

Place your hand where you feel the pain. Say “Bismillah” three times, then say seven times the words below.

    Sahih Muslim 2202.

Dard ki jagah par haath rakhain. Teen baar “Bismillah” kahain, phir neeche wali dua saat baar parhain.

The dua for pain (say it 7 times)

Place your hand at the site of the pain and say: (Bismil-lah (three times)) the supplicate seven times: (aAAoothu billahi waqudratih min sharri ma ajidu wa-ohathir.)

Place your hand at the site of the pain and say: (In the name of Allah(three times)) the supplicate seven times: (I take refuge in Allah and within His omnipotence from the evil that I feel and am wary of.)

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

Un logon ka raasta jinpar tu nay inam farmaya, jo maatoob nahin huey (na unka jinpar tera gazab hota raha) , jo bhatke huey nahin hain

Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

  1. 2:255

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Allah woh zinda e javed (hamesha rehne wali) hasti hai, jo tamaam qayinaat ko sambhale huey hai, uske siwa koi khuda nahin hai, woh na sota hai aur na usey oung lagti hai, zameen aur asmaano mein jo kuch hai usi ka hai, kaun hai jo uski janaab mein uski ijazat ke bagair sifarish kar sakey? Jo kuch bandon ke saamne hai usey bhi woh jaanta hai aur jo kuch unsey ojhal hai ussey bhi woh waqif hai, aur uski maloomaat mein se koi cheez unki giraft e idraak mein nahin aa sakti illa yeh ke kisi cheez ka ilm woh khud hi unko dena chahey, uski hukumat asmaano aur zameen par chayi hui hai aur unki nigehbaani uske liye koi thaka dene wala kaam nahin hai, bas wahi ek buzurg o bartar zaat hai

The end of Al-Baqarah (2:285–286)

  1. 2:285

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

Rasool us hidayat par iman laya hai jo uske Rubb ki taraf se uspar nazil hui hai aur jo log is Rasool ke maanne waley hain unhon ne bhi is hidayat ko dilse tasleem karliya hai, yeh sab Allah aur uske Farishton aur uski kitabon aur uske Rasoolon ko maante hain aur unka qaul yeh hai ke : “hum Allah ke Rasoolon ko ek dusre se alag nahin karte, humne hukum suna aur itaat qabool ki. Malik! Hum tujhse khata-bakhsi (bakshish) ke taalib hain aur humein teri hi taraf palatna hai.”

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

Allah kisi mutanaffis par uski maqdarat (taqat) se badkar zimmedari ka bojh nahin daalta, har shaks ne jo neki kamayi hai uska phal usi ke liye hai aur jo badhi sameti hai uska wabaal usi par hai, (Iman laney walon! Tum yun dua kiya karo) aey hamare Rubb! Parwardigaar ! jis baar ko uthane ki taaqat hum mein nahin hai woh humpar na rakh, hamare saath narmi kar, humse darguzar farma, humpar reham kar, tu hamara maula hai, kafiron ke muqable mein hamari madad kar

Protection

Duas of protection

Ibn AAabbas related that the Messenger of Allah used to commend Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn to Allah’s protection, saying:(OAAeethukuma bikalimatil-lahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wahammah, wamin kulli AAaynin lammah.)

Ibn AAabbas related that the Messenger of Allah used to commend Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn to Allah’s protection, saying:(I commend you two to the protection of Allah’s perfect words from every devil, vermin, and every evil eye.)

If you see anything of your brother that pleases you, or of his person or of his property [then ask Allah to bless him in it] for the envious eye is real.

Questions

About ruqyah

What is ruqyah?

Ruqyah is seeking healing and protection from Allah by reciting the Quran, His names and the supplications of the Prophet ﷺ over yourself or someone who is ill. The Prophet ﷺ said there is no harm in ruqyah as long as it contains no shirk (Sahih Muslim 2200).

Can I do ruqyah on myself?

Yes. Self-ruqyah is following the Sunnah: the Prophet ﷺ recited the last three surahs into his hands and wiped over his body every night (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).

Does ruqyah replace a doctor?

No. Ruqyah is a supplication to Allah and goes together with medical treatment. Please see a doctor for any illness.

What should I avoid?

Amulets, unclear words, anything that calls on other than Allah, and anyone who claims to know the unseen. Ruqyah is only with the Quran, Allah’s names and authentic supplications.
