About the Islamic calendar
Which calendar do these dates follow?
The Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is calculated in advance. Many countries begin Ramadan, Eid and other months after sighting the new moon, so the date where you live may be a day earlier or later.
When does an Islamic day begin?
At sunset. So the night of a date comes before its day: the first night of Ramadan, for example, is the evening before the first fast.
What are the twelve Hijri months?
Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Akhirah, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah, Dhul Hijjah.
Why does Ramadan move earlier each year?
The Hijri year follows the moon and is about 354 or 355 days long, around 11 days shorter than the solar year, so each Islamic date comes about 11 days earlier every year.
